H, N - Leasing Land for Oil and Gas Development
George H. Byelich, Michigan State University Extension, Lincoln, Michigan
Land owners are at a distinct disadvantage when dealing with the oil and gas industry in understanding the language in an oil and gas lease.
The MSU Extension program has been very successful and well received all across the Lower Peninsula with thousands of land owner contacts.
This program takes you inside the lease and explains it inlayman terms. Landowners then are given options for negotiating new language into a lease that improves their financial return and protects the integrity of the land, water and natural resources they own.
The program is available on video and several published handouts give explicit language to be used in lease negotiations.
Very few people across the country provide the depth and understanding that was developed in Michigan. Participants will be given acces to all materials and be able to help the public and/or private interests represent.
The estimated impact in Michigan is around one-half billion dollars.
