S, N - Spiritual values of the forest
Linda E. Christian, USDA, Juneau, AK
As a result of working in the forest every working day for over 20 years, I noticed a special and uplifting quality to just being in the forest. This sparked my interest to conduct a little research on this phenomenon and found many authors shared this "heightened" experience. In the liturature words like peak experience and sense of place were often used, Native Americans and Alaska Natives have a long oral history of its existance.
The purpose of my talk is to share my findings and acknowledge the spiritual and cultural significance a forest does have to a growing segment of our society and some thoughts on why this could be important to the environmental communites objections to harvesting timber.
