S, 22 - Arlington National Cemetery's urban forest inventory: Managing hallowed ground.
Arlington National Cemetery is a national treasure and is the resting place of over 260,000 people including presidents, military personnel and national heroes. The Cemetery includes more than 500 developed acres of land visited by more than three million people each year. Arlington National Cemetery is also the home of a richly diverse population of trees and shrubs, some of which were present at the time of the revolutionary war. To assist in the management of this extremely valuable urban forest, an inventory of trees and shrubs was conducted in 2001. The inventory utilized computerized data collection programs and mapping with GPS receivers. This presentation will provide an introduction to the challenges of urban forest management at the Cemetery, review the design and results of the inventory, and discuss how the inventory data and maps are used in day-to-day management, including prioritization and tracking of contract work. A split screen presentation will show actual trees and shrubs in concert with the corresponding inventory map and data. The presentation is co-authored by Arlington National Cemetery's Urban Forester and the inventory contractor's Project Manager.
