S, B4, 33 - Preparation and use of riparian forest ecological sites for agricultural areas
Ecological sites are landscape units with potential to produce similar kinds and amounts of vegetation that react similarly to management and disturbance. Descriptions are prepared to document the specifics of vegetation species, composition, successional pathways and communities, production, and associated interpretations related to climate, soils, wildlife, and moisture regimes. Descriptions prepared for riparian ecological sites can be used by agricultural planners to competently plan, design and manage corridors along streams and other water bodies on U.S. farm lands. Restored corridors are crucial for reestablishing and reconnecting terrestrial and aquatic habitats and augmenting water quality improvement practices on uplands. Riparian ecological site descriptions are largely undeveloped for agricultural areas due to lack of training on how to prepare descriptions and, in part, to staff and time limitations.
