A study of nonindustrial private forest landowners(NIPF) in east Texas was conducted in 2000-2001. The purpose of the study was to identify selected characteristics of NIPF lands and landowners, and describe the sources of assistance and types of advice sought by landowners. Further, the study was to determine the factors associated with non-harvesting and non-regenerating behavior. Results indicate most NIPF landowners wre over 60 years of age, well educated, retired, predominantly male, with incomes greater than $50,000 per year. Factor analyses were uses to group common components which best described market segments of NIPF owners, their reasons for owning land and harvesting and regeneration behaviors. The study revealed most landowners intend to pass their land on to their children, but have done no estate planning.
