R,D3&B4,31 - Institutionalizing non-timber forest products into forest management and research
James L. Chamberlain III, USDA, Blacksburg, VA; and D. R. DeYoe
Non-timber forest products are important components to working forests. They are critical elements to the vitality of healthy forest ecosystems, as well as the economic sustainability of local communities. Unfortunately, they have not been integrated into forest management nor forestry research. Whereas, forest management plans and programs are developed for multiple uses and products, in general the biological materials that produce non-timber products have not been considered. In general, the knowledge has not been developed to answer many of the questions that forest managers may have regarding integrating NTFPs in management activities. Forestry research is lacking to provide these answers. This session will explore constraints and opportunities to institutionalize non-timber forest products in forest management and research. Participants will be challenged to explore the issues and develop mechanisms to formalize NTFP research and management.
