S, 20 - American Chestnut Trees (past – present – future)
Bruce Wakeland, Consulting Forester, Culver, IN
The American Chestnut tree, its history, its importance, what the American Chestnut Foundation is doing to restore the tree to the eastern forest, and how foresters can become involved in the restoration effort.

I would start by making the case for the restoration of the American Chestnut tree into its natural range. I would show the past grandeur of this tree species, and why it would be very important if the chestnut blight could be overcome and the tree reintroduced. I would explain how the American Chestnut Foundation is working to restore this tree, how it’s backcross breeding program works, and what is the current status of our effort. I would cover the future plans for our breeding program and reintroduction efforts. I would let foresters know how they can get involved in this breeding and restoration effort. Slides and handouts would be used.

New knowledge, skills, or insights that participants will gain from session: 1) Knowledge about what was the most important eastern tree species, which few living people have a personal memory of. 2) Knowledge of how a backcross breeding program for trees works. 3) Insights about why this restoration effort is important and how it could improve our future forests.
