Precise Directional Felling Techniques for Ecologically Sound Harvesting
Steven A. Harrington, Forest Stewards Guild, Santa Fe, NC
Skilled directional felling is a key component of ecological timber harvesting. Forest Stewards Guild members are promoting precision directional felling techniques through demonstrations and educational outreach of highly skilled felling techniques perfected in Europe. This training is providing new skills to loggers and promoting increased silvicultural options that provide a greater level of long-term protection to forest resources. Precise placement of trees during harvesting limits timber breakage and splintering while protecting residual high quality future timber trees. Precise directional felling techniques also promote a higher level of logger safety and efficiency. Higher quality thinnings, improvements cuts, group selection and single tree selection harvests result in more productive woodlands for the future. Highly skilled loggers are extremely valuable to foresters and landowners who work closely with nature to enhance forest ecosystems while continuously receiving a steady flow of timber products from their woodlands.
