The El Nino/La Nina is truly an amazing ocean AND atmosphere phenomena that can be used in informal (and formal) education to excite audiences about our Earth systems. Every decade or so, 1982, 1997, 2015, a major El Nino develops and the words become media headlines, but the simple media image of the anomalous ocean surface temperatures in the Eastern Pacific is a confusing derivative for the public. What are some other ways of "seeing" how the shift in the position of the PWWP, Pacific Warm Water Pool, changes the weather around the world? What principles of the National Academies of Sciences informal learning scaffolding can be utilized for easy comprehension?
