Among Wayne’s many contributions to tropical cyclone research are his development of frameworks for analyzing axisymmetric, balanced vortices. In particular, his development with James Hack of the transformed Eliassen balanced vortex model reduced the interior physics of tropical cyclones to a remarkably simple framework, an important step towards a comprehensive understanding of tropical cyclone dynamics. In this talk I will review the transformed Eliassen balanced vortex model and what it has taught us about tropical cyclones.
