The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the United States Meteorological Authority for Aviation to the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization. As such, the FAA establishes policy, procedures, and requirements for aviation weather information within the United States National Airspace System. In the past year, the FAA has established new requirements procedures designed to better to engage users and stakeholders of aviation weather information; assessed work conducted on potential effects of radiation from the space environment to commercial aircraft and space travelers; continued to research aviation impact variables such as convection, turbulence, icing, winds, and ceiling & visibility; assessed new automated sensor technology; and continued to build the infrastructure for improved translation of weather information for air traffic controllers. This presentation will highlight several current initiatives within the FAA and partner agencies to improve aviation weather services for the increased safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System.
