Leadership development programs in the Geosciences that address the needs of early career professionals and nurture leadership development among women and underrepresented minorities have only recently been created. In 2018, the leadership of the American Meteorological Society made a bold move to support the creation of one such program. This presentation will describe the AMS Early Career Leadership Academy, a unique leadership development experience for early career professionals, in particular women and underrepresented minorities, who are working in weather, water, climate science professions to help them become more effective in their professions; prepare them for leadership roles; and foster a strong community of supportive peers and collaborators. The author will highlight the need, importance and impact of ECLA, its program design, and recommendations for improving and sustaining this creative leadership experience.
