The tropical tropopause layer (TTL) continues to be a focus of active community research, as a nexus of interactions among large- and small-scale circulations, deep convection, cirrus and radiative coupling, and transport pathways to the stratosphere. Exciting new observations from high altitude aircraft measurements and growing records of satellite data are refining understanding of observed variability and controlling processes, and helping to constrain model behavior. This talk will give an update of recent observational highlights and comparisons with model simulations, and discuss some outstanding research questions.
