An evolution of computer systems used by NWS forecasters has occurred over the past several decades. A number of systems will be reviewed, with references to key changes in the field of information technology. In addition, how various entities within the NWS evolved and adapted differently compared to other locations are described. Roles of NWS field personnel and how they adapted to the evolution of information processing systems are also described. Finally, given what the NWS has evolved from, thoughts are presented on the future enhancements and changes in information processing systems.
