Extreme heat events can adversely affect air quality and human health, as well as sensitive ecosystems. There is tremendous interest in quantifying the potential changes to extreme temperature as a result of a changing climate. In addition, the additive effects of increased atmospheric moisture (which can raise the heat index) are becoming increasingly important.
This research examines projected changes to extreme temperature and heat index by dynamically downscaling CMIP5 projections with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The presentation will show the projected evolution of changes to extreme temperature and heat index under different scenarios throughout the 21st Century. Emphasis will be placed on sub-daily evaluation and the diurnal cycle.
