Measuring the upper atmosphere is arguably one of the most important advances in atmospheric science. Naturally, upper air measurements have evolved since the early 1900s (and even before that!) and will continue evolving during the next century. Let's take a balloon ride down memory lane to some of the early methods of upper air measurements, current techniques, and then consider the potential way forward in measuring from the surface to the stratosphere.
