In 1974, Arakawa and Schubert emphasized the importance of the covariations of water vapor and temperature in the presence of deep cumulus convection, but more than 45 years later our understanding is still very incomplete. I will present an analysis of vertically resolved water vapor tendencies taken from cloud-resolving numerical simulations of several field experiments, with a focus on the coupling of surface evaporation with other processes.
