The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Office of NextGen Weather Research Branch has recently developed an internship program. The selected intern will gain new knowledge about aviation meteorology, program management, and the day-to-day workings of the FAA. Additionally, interns can expect an interdisciplinary experience that exposes them to other fields such as engineering, human factors, and business. The FAA provides a variety of tasks and assignments that will contribute to the intern’s professional and personal development. In addition, the Weather Research Branch prioritizes taking students to various meetings, events, and tours outside of the office to create an enjoyable and educational internship.

As a summer 2019 intern, I had various roles but my main project was to analyze and summarize several weather Research Evolution Plans (REPs) and then write a review on each. These reviews laid out current research, accomplishments, and incomplete projects since the REPs were written. My final review will aid in the writing of new and updated REPs that track the progress of several research areas and guide the FAA’s aviation weather research focus.

This poster will depict what an intern for the FAA’s Weather Research Branch can expect to experience and accomplish. It will describe the potential roles of an intern through the lens of my specific experience and highlight the benefits of an internship with the FAA.
