NCAR / EOL deployed an Integrated Sounding System (ISS) to the CHEESEHEAD campaign in northern Wisconsin in 2019. CHEESEHEAD (Chequamegon Heterogeneous Ecosystem Energy-balance Study Enabled by a High-density Extensive Array of Detectors) is a large campaign being lead by Ankur Desai (University of Wisconsin) and co-PIs from Wisconsin, KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) and NEON (National Ecological Observatory Network), plus many collaborators. The study aims to examine atmospheric interaction with the highly heterogeneous surface of the northern woods with a wide variety of instrumentation and modelling efforts, including the ISS. The ISS focused mainly on monitoring the atmospheric boundary layer and included the NCAR 449 MHz Modular Wind Profiler radar, radiosonde soundings, sodar-RASS, lidar and surface meteorological sensors. The presentation will report on preliminary observations from the ISS, as well as instrumentation, data processing and quality control issues from the deployment.
