The Eddy Diffusivity/Mass Flux (EDMF) parameterization offers a framework for a unified parameterization of sub-grid scale turbulent and convective motions. The EDMF parameterization requires a specification of entrainment rates to account for the change of cloud mass fluxes with height. The entrainment rates are known to have a profound influence on on the development of clouds and on climate sensitivity in general circulation models. In this work, large-eddy simulations of deep convection in various radiative-convective equilibrium states are analyzed in order to learn how the entrainment rate depends on environmental variables and to quantify its uncertainties.
