An overview of recent developments in NRL's atmospheric global modeling and research section will be presented. Topics briefly presented will include 1) an update on the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS), 2) the development of the new global ensemble system, including the ensemble transform initial perturbation scheme and stochastic physics perturbations, 3) development work on the NOGAPS Emanuel cumulus scheme incorporating cloud-top temperature sensitivity and environmental moisture dependence in precipitation efficiency, 4) NAVDAS-NOGAPS observation sensitivity results including global-domain observation impact and adaptive selection of satellite data, 5) a probabilistic approach to parameter estimation that is used as a tool for improved understanding of parameterization behavior, improvement of the parameterization, and as a basis for stochastic perturbations, 6) an investigation of cyclogenesis in the Atlantic and Western Pacific related to tropical waves, 7) aqua-planet experiments with the NRL Spectral Element Atmospheric Model (NSEAM) coupled with the NOGAPS physics. .
