Using BoiVerify as a Forecast Tool to Improve WFO LKN Forecasts

Jason M. Grzywacz, NOAA/NWSFO, Elko, NV

The results of an ongoing study at WFO LKN are examined in an attempt to utilize the BOIVerify program to forecast temperatures with greater accuracy. The study includes classifying each day into a particular weather regime and then comparing similar synoptic weather days using the BOIVerify program. Although this research is in the beginning stages, the usefulness of the Bias Corrected (BC) temperature grids during long lived inversions is being observed. Other synoptic weather regimes will be investigated over the next couple of months to determine when using the BC grids will be of the most use to the operational forecaster. This presentation will highlight the research process and the results, indicating when the BC grids can provide the forecaster with the best possible starting point.
