The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), led by the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC) in collaboration with the Ocean Studies Board (OSB), Board on Live Sciences (BLS), and DEPS/NMMB, organized an workshop on the future of boundary layer observating in October 2017. It aims to address an overarching science question: What observations are needed (over land, ocean, and ice) to make meaningful progress in our understanding and modeling of the global atmospheric boundary layer? More than 60 scientists from the academia, government, and private sectors participated at the workshop. Here we present a summary on the key findings from the workshop.
