Composite Distribution and Analysis of Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes: 1950-2005
Lori A. Schultz, University of Alabama, Huntsville, AL ; and D. J. Cecil
Hurricane Rita (2005) produced over 90 tornadoes in four states, most in less than 48 hours. This work will look at Rita's tornado distribution and how it compares to the U.S. tropical cyclone (TC) climatology. The synoptic environment, as well as the regional influences, will be investigated for factors favorable to tornado-genesis to include boundary formation and evidence of dry air intrusion at midlevels. Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) data, National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) output, and the Advanced Radar for Meteorological and Operational Research (ARMOR) data will be examined for radar derived characteristics and kinematic structure of the individual meso-cyclones associated with each of the reported tornadoes. Another area of study will investigate possible reasons (if any) for the apparent groupings of occurrence (of the tornadoes in time). Recorded presentation
