Tornadoes in close proximity to a major winter storm event over East Central Colorado

Stephen J. Hodanish, NOAA/NWS, Pueblo, CO

This poster examines a major early Spring cyclone which developed over the State of Colorado on 24 April 2007. What makes this case unique is that while heavy snow was occurring over the western sections of the Palmer Divide of east central Colorado (eastern El Paso county), numerous tornadoes (10) occurred ~120 km to the east over the eastern part of the Palmer Divide (Lincoln county into Cheyenne county). This poster will examine the synoptic and mesoscale environment over east central Colorado on this date. Strong low level shear along with sufficient CAPE was likely in place over the region which allowed for these vortices to develop.
