Evaluation of new and current products and techniques at the Satellite Analysis Branch of NOAA/NESDIS

The Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB) of NOAA/NESDIS has provided tropical cyclone (TC) intensity estimations using the Dvorak technique for over 30 years. With advances in technology, both in satellite information and computing speed as well as a stronger focus into heavy rainfall caused by TCs, SAB has initiated new services to the operational TC community. These include implementation of products such as the increasingly popular Tropical Rainfall Potential (TRaP) with email notification by basin to users and serving as a test-bed for cutting edge technologies developed by researchers for estimating TC intensity. The poster will focus on the results of validation studies of the products provided by SAB, such as Dvorak classifications and TRaP, as well as validation of the AMSU TC intensity emails provided by CIRA and CIMSS, CIMSS Advanced Objective Dvorak Technique (AODT) and Tropical Cyclone Intensity Estimation (TIE) Model.
