Hurricane Isabel Wind Field Reconstruction and Insured Loss Estimation
PAPER WITHDRAWN
Richard Dixon, Risk Management Solutions, London, United Kingdom; and M. Drayton and A. Boissonnade
A reconstruction of the wind field of Hurricane Isabel, that made landfall in North Carolina on September 18, 2003 and affected several states, was performed for the purpose of assessing insured losses due to primary and secondary wind hazards.
Data, including those obtained from the AOML/Hurricane Research Division's H*WIND project are used with a time stepping windfield model for assessing the levels of surface winds experienced within the areas affected. Results from field reconnaissance missions and detailed land use land cover information are used to provide iterations upon this windfield. Insurance loss data and the results of this analysis provide an assessment of the range of uncertainty in the reconstruction of hurricane wind fields for quantifying insured losses.
