Tropical cyclone analysis techniques from QuikSCAT NRCS, wind and ambiguity data and microwave imagery

This paper demonstrates several new analysis techniques over tropical cyclones (TC) that uses a combination of QuikSCAT data and microwave imagery. Although each of these various microwave sources have been discussed and analyzed in previous talks and papers, this paper shows how the added value of combining and cross-referencing these data allows the analyst to obtain the highest confidence of TC position, formation, relative intensity and outer wind structure. In particular the importance of the surface wind and rain patterns over the TC as depicted in the 3km grid of the Normalized Radar Cross-Section (NRCS) images from QuikSCAT will be shown to be a vital ingredient in these procedures. The added use of the QuikSCAT wind and ambiguity data, along with the 85 and 37 GHz microwave imagery all combine to provide a complete picture of the TC.
