ABSTRACT
The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 made a first landfall around 1845Z at 40.8N, 72.8W near Bellport, Long Island, New York and a second landfall around 1940Z at 41.3N, 72.8W near New Haven, Connecticut. This study does a complete re-analysis of the hurricane's surface winds and intensity throughout the life of the storm as part of the Atlantic Hurricane Re-Analysis Project. Data utilized throughout the course of the study were Historical Weather Maps for the period of September 10-23, 1938, the COAS ship database, the Monthly Weather Review ship and land observations and the Original Monthly Records from the National Climatic Data Center. These analyses depict the storm track as well as the distribution and extent of tropical storm (or hurricane) force winds. The Kaplan-Demaria Inland Wind Decay Model was used to adjust the second landfalling wind speed. These data were used to generate a new HURDAT database for the storm including storm intensity and track.
