Diurnal variations of precipitation over land: A challenge to models

D. A. Randall, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO

Over warm continents, precipitation undergoes a very strong diurnal cycle, which varies somewhat with geographical location. Large-scale models currently have significant difficulty in reproducing the observed cycle. We review the basic processes involved, relate them to the formulations of existing models, and suggest improvements that have been designed based on simulations performed with cloud-resolving models. .
