Preliminary Field Review of Automated Intensity Estimates
Caroline A. Bower, Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Pearl Harbor, HI; and K. Viault, J. Roach, and J. Jaykoski
Preliminary findings at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) on the Advanced Objective Dvorak Technique (AODT), and University of Wisconsin-Madison Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Advanced Dvorak Technique (ADT) will be presented.
Automated intensity estimates were investigated for intensity accuracy based on tropical cyclone intensity, position confidence number and satellite fix type. ADT estimates from CIMSS and AODT estimates from JTWC and the Air Force Weather Agency Satellite Operations Branch (AFWA/XOGM) were compared to JTWC subjective satellite intensity estimates; this comparison is the basis for these preliminary findings.
Further comments on operational experiences with AODT estimates are provided. Operational utility and usage of these products, and acceptable skill for JTWC operations will also be discussed.
