Dynamic Characteristics of Typhoon Vortex Spiral Wave and Its Translation: A Diagnostic Analysis

Xiangde Xu, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing, P. R. China, China; and S. Zhang, L. Chen, and F. Wei

In this study, power spectrum analysis is applied to investigate wave train structure of typhoon spiral cloud structure using TBB data for three targeted typhoons. The results reveal that characteristics of the vortex spiral wave structure of relevant fields are exhibited in the typhoon center and the adjacent areas, that the typhoon spiral waves are represented by significant synoptic and meso-scale wave features of bi-modal distribution in periodicity. The characteristics of flow patterns of spiral waves in upper and lower troposphere are related to maintenance and development of typhoon. Finally a conceptual model on typhoon vortex spiral wave structure is proposed.
