To compare the abilities of satellite precipitation retrievals in reflecting the tropical cyclone (TC) precipitation in the Northwestern Pacific area, four years of 24h precipitation retrievals from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite and CPC MORPHed precipitation (CMORPH) are compared with surface rain gauge data from China. 50 rainfall processes caused by TCs are compared statistically, with totally 27216 rain gauge stations. It is found that the retrievals from TRMM can reflect TC-related rainfall more realistically than those from CMORPH in a general sense. The threat score (TS) of retrievals from TRMM for 1mm, 10mm, 25mm, 50mm, and 100 mm precipitation is 0.59, 0.30, 0.12, 0.03, and 0.002 respectively while 0.55, 0.23, 0.06, 0.01, and 0 for CMORPH retrievals. Both TRMM and CMORPH retrievals are the best in south China, while with worsening performance as latitude increases. Anyway, the lowest TS appears in 30ºN-35ºN and 45ºN-50ºN for both datasets. In addition, equitable threat score (ETS), correlation coefficient (CC), and similarity coefficient (SC) are also calculated and will be presented at the conference.
