Typhoon Landfall Variations in East China during the Last 500 years

A detailed examination of government records in China yields a 500-year record of tropical cyclone landfall along the East China coast. This paper presents the methodology of how the data are extracted and the results of analyses of these data. An increasing trend appears in the frequency of landfall although it might be related to the availability of data in earlier and late years. Removing these possible biases in the data suggests no significant trend. Oscillations in the frequency of landfall are found with periods varying from decadal, multi-decadal to centennial. These oscillations are related to proxy data of other atmospheric and oceanographic oscillations. The results will be presented at the conference.
