The ability of climate models to simulate tropical cyclones continues to improve. Here, a very fine resolution (3km) tropical cyclone climate model is described. The model employs the CSIRO variable-resolution climate model CCAM, initially running at 60 km resolution, to generate incipient tropical cyclone vortices. Once detected, these are then simulated at fine resolution to improve the model's representation of tropical cyclone processes, including cyclone convection and intensity. The 3km grid is relocatable as its initial position depends upon the location of incipient vortices. Preliminary results are presented from this modelling system over the Australian region.
