A study on the characteristics of perceived temperature over the Korean Peninsula

Perceived temperature (PT) predicted using mesoscale model WRF is validated with PT calculated from observed meteorological data and their characteristics is examined over the Korean Peninsula. Correlation coefficient between PT and temperature shows about 0.87-0.88 and PT has a 4.5-5.0°C higher than temperature. Predicted PT has a tendency of cold bias by means of temperature forecast of WRF which is colder than observation. Although a temperature error increases with forecast time, PT shows a best result at 12 hour forecast due to an increase of error of relative humidity during initial forecast time. Distribution of PT shows that it decreases in the higher latitude, but costal region of PT lower than inland PT. Frequency distribution of PT according to thermal sensitivity shows that PT increases over inland region during summer period. We will present the distribution of PT during cold season and the relations between PT and input meteorological variables to increase PT predictability. This study will contribute to the understanding of PT over the Korean Peninsula and can be used for daily forecast of heat/cold stress during warm/cold season.
