An operational bright band detection algorithm is described. The algorithm constructs a vertical profile of reflectivity from radar volume data within a specified range of the radar. This profile is tested for the presence of a local maximum meeting the criteria for a bright band. The algorithm contains a number of adjustable parameters. The parameters include the data range used to create the profile, the thickness of the bright band, the reflectivity excess at the bright band center and the number of samples required for a valid data point. The algorithm was tested with data from several different parts of the world to determine the best values for the adjustable parameters. Knowledge of the height and thickness of the bright band is used to mark areas affected by bright band contamination.
