School WeatherNets: Worth the Effort?

John B. McLaughlin, KCCI-TV, Des Moines, IA

During the Spring of 2001, KCCI television began installation of a network of 40 school-based weather reporting stations. While a number of commercially available systems were available from various vendors, cost and licensing limitations resulted in the KCCI taking an inexpensive sensor system and adapting it to the station's specific needs. While the project has been successful overall, we will examine the many considerations to be explored before embarking on such a project. We will examine the reaction of communities where sensors were located, track the number of internet "hits" on each sensor location and theorize how this relates to sensor location, and reflect on how the project would be changed if it were to be done all over again.
