Hurricane Andrew—10 Years Later
Hurricane Andrew smashed South Florida 10 years ago this August. It was the most expensive natural disaster to hit the United States times four. In fact, the disaster was so big that it was poorly covered and poorly appreciated at the time, and is generally misunderstood even today. In
spite of widespread reporting to the contrary, in general the construction of the destroyed homes was quite good, and evacuation did not work very well, and the storm was no where near "The Big One". This paper will look
at the event and the lessons learned.
