The National Weather Service (NWS) Performance During the November 10, 2002 Tornado Outbreak
Lawrence Dunn, NOAA/NWS, Salt Lake City, UT
Over the Veterans Day Weekend of November 9-11, 2002 at least 76 tornadoes occurred over 17 states from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast. These tornadoes resulted in 36 fatalities in 5 states. The NWS issued over 650 warnings and 19 watches during this event. All fatalities occurred within watches and warnings. This presentation will briefly cover the chronology of the event and show the radar imagery from various WSR-88D radars associated with killer tornadoes. Warning polygons as issued in real-time will be overlayed on the radar imagery. The role of the media in this event and how real-time interaction between the NWS and the media has evolved will be discussed.
