Use of C-Band Radar and a School Based Weather Sensor Network by the media

On 10 July 2002, an early morning downburst from a bowing segment in a line of thunderstorms produced 96 mph winds over the town of Glidden in Carroll County Iowa. The event was recorded in real-time by the KCCI-TV C-band Doppler weather radar located 65 miles from the storm, and a SchoolNet weather sensor located nearly directly under the downburst. The event is unique in that media remote sensing systems were utilized extensively by the National Weather Service to issue strongly worded weather statements and severe thunderstorm warnings during a time the WSR-88D radar was not operational. This case study will demonstrate the important of public-private partnerships and cooperation during significant weather events.
