A simple and effective package of NEXRAD wind data quality control is developed and incorporated into a real-time wind retrieval system. This package is designed to automatically detect major types of quality problems in NEXRAD Level II and III data, such as bird/insect contamination, noisy Doppler velocity field, and unsuccessful dealiasing. The package has been running real-time and upgraded several times since October 2002. During this period, the code development has been challenged by scientific and technical issues concerning how to automatically identify and quantify features that present certain types of data quality problems with high probabilities, and how to determine the thresholds for the related quality controls not only empirically but also based on robust statistics. These issues are believed to be very important for long-term development of data quality control and will be addressed at the conference based on our recent experiences and studies.
