Multiple-Doppler Observations of tornadoes and tornadogenesis from the ROTATE-2003 project
Joshua Wurman, Center for Severe Weather Research, Boulder, CO
The Radar Observations of Tornadoes And Thunderstorms Experiment (ROTATE-2003) will employ at least 3 mobile DOW radars, DOW2, DOW3, and the new Rapid-DOW, to study the process of tornadogenesis by establishing very high resolution multiple-Doppler surveillance regions. Tornadogenesis and tornado structure will be observed. Basedlines of 10-15 km will permit sub-200 m resolution volumes and observations very near the ground permitting retrieval of accurate vertical motions and terms in the vorticity budget of tornadoes. Preliminary results will be presented.
