P10R.8
A least squares technique for estimating 2D wind vectors from multiple radars
Kurt D. Hondl, NOAA/NSSL, Norman, OK
A network of Doppler radars has the potential to provide a 2D wind vector analysis if the observation angles between the radials are sufficiently close to 90 degrees. The computational requirements to compute the wind vectors has typically prevented the application of the multi-Doppler analysis from being performed in real-time.
A computationally efficient least squares technique is applied to the multi-Doppler radial velocity observations to compute the 2D wind vectors. The real-time application of this technique was developed and displayed using NSSL's Warning Decision Support System - Integrated Information (WDSS-II) software. Results from the least squares multi-Doppler analysis will be shown from the network of WSR-88D radars and from simulation experiments.
