The evolution of fine-scale boundaries on 15 June 2002 during IHOP

A primary motivation for the convective initiation component of the International H2O Project (IHOP) was to obtain both spatially and temporally high resolution observations of the wind and moisture fields in boundary layer convection. On 15 June 2002 over the Oklahoma panhandle, the interaction between several fine-scale boundaries was captured in the reflectivity and velocity data from multiple ground-based mobile Doppler radars. Also of interest is the interaction between these boundaries and the horizontal convective rolls that appear across the analysis domain. Additionally, surprisingly weak convergence is noted along some of the boundaries despite a prominent reflectivity signature. Multi-Doppler wind syntheses are performed to document the evolution of the convergence fields during boundary interactions to better understand the influence of these interactions on parcel trajectories and the potential for convective initiation.
