A New C-band Polarimetric Radar with Simultaneous Transmission for Hydrometeor Classification and Rainfall Measurement

Enterprise Electronics Cooperation (EEC) and Weather Decision Technologies, Inc (WDT), with consultation from the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) have partnered to bring the latest state-of-the-science combination of polarimetric hardware and applications to the commercial market. EEC has designed and manufactured a low-maintenance simultaneous transmission C-band polarimetric (SIDPOL) radar capable of deployment in both research and commercial applications. Algorithms designed by NSSL that will be part of the WSR-88D polarization system have been implemented on SIDPOL. These algorithms include data quality control, hydrometeor classification, and rainfall estimation using the available polarization parameters. The paper will present a briefing of the SIDPOL system and discuss the principles for rainfall estimation and hydrometeor classification at C-band.
