33rd Conference on Broadcast Meteorology

11.2

UV Index reporting trends and changes to the UV Index

Jason Samenow, US Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC

According to a survey conducted by Boston University in 2003, Broadcast Meteorologists have increased their coverage of sun safety issues but are reporting the UV Index less compared to 1995. Survey respondents generally found the UVI to be easy to use and effective, but some questioned its value in areas where there was little day to day variability. EPA will present strategies and new methods for reporting the UVI, and convey information about effectively educating the public about sun safety.

In addition, EPA will highlight changes to the UVI scale, made effective in May 2004 based on guidance from the World Health Organization. Adopted by the U.S. and many other countries, the revised scale and reporting guidelines aim to streamline UV Index reporting world-wide.
