33rd Conference on Broadcast Meteorology

7.1

The future of Models

Stephen Lord, NOAA/NWS/NCEP/EMC, Camp Springs, VA

The National Centers for Environmental Prediction, Environmental Modeling Center (NCEP/EMC) is continually upgrading and modernizing the NCEP forecast suite. This suite is also becoming more capable in forecasting both weather and climate events. Overarching objectives include migrating to a new Earth Modeling Suite, which will include the current model runs but also bring in real time ocean forecasting and Air Quality, improving the forecasts of seasonal to interannual climate and including an ensemble-based Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) system. To assist in accelerating the improvements to forecast systems, NCEP is fully engaged in collaborative Test Beds with the external community. The status of each component of the NCEP forecast suite will be described.
