Overview and future plans for the mobile weather radar program at OU
Michael I. Biggerstaff, Univ. of Oklahoma, Norman, OK
A summary of recent findings based on observations from the Shared Mobile Atmospheric Research and Teaching (SMART) radars will be presented. These include the relationship between cloud dynamics and cloud electrification determined from dual-Doppler analyses and three-dimensional lightning mapping array data for a tornadic supercell, a non-severe squall line, and a weak multicell convective cluster. Also presented will be the first dual-Doppler analysis of the eyewall convection of a landfalling hurricane that shows the detailed patterns of vertical motion within and adjacent to the eyewall of Hurricane Isabel when it made landfall in 2003. The presentation will conclude with plans for dual-polarimetric upgrade of one of the mobile C-band radars as well as an overview of the mobile X-band dual-polarimetric radar currently under construction in a joint project led by the National Severe Storms Laboratory.
