A comparison of radar attenuation correction algorithms using simulated dual-polarimetric radar data

Ryan M. May, Univ. of Oklahoma, Norman, OK; and M. I. Biggerstaff

A radar simulator that generates synthetic radar time series data has been developed. This simulator utilizes the output from a numerical cloud model with liquid-phase hydrometeor microphysics. Simulation of dual-polarimetric variables, including propagation effects, is achieved using the T-matrix scattering algorithm. As an example application, the performance of several attenuation correction algorithms is examined. By comparing the output of the algorithms with simulated data without attenuation, the accuracy of the corrected fields is able to be assessed directly.
